Building a solar island

Todays photo shoot documents the progress in the construction of the sun island (Zoneiland) in Almere. 520 solar collectors with a total surface of 7000 m2 are going to provide heat and warm water for 2700 houses in the nearby district Noorderplassen-West. This is a project of Nuon and the city of Almere with subsidies of the European Union.

Virtual Almere on 360 Cities

Yesterday I used the sunny Good Friday for a photowalk through the center of Almere and took a series of spherical panoramas featuring the modern architecture in our city. For the shots I used my Sigma 8mm fisheye lens with the Nodal Ninja 3 panorama head. New new version of Autopano Pro was used to stitch the 7-8 images of each scene.

Urban Knitting in Almere

My photo shoot today took me to Almere-Haven, where more than 250 volunteers knitted for the Flevolands Vlijt project, which was initiated by artists Bertina Slettenhaar and Mariël Bisschops. The knitted/crocheted outfits in mostly blue and green tones are symbolizing a tribute to water, wrapped around living elements, the trees.

Local Dutch Elections

For a couple of weeks I have been following the Dutch local elections now with my camera. While usually these local elections would not be considered to be very interesting beyond the borders of our community, this time they are. On March 3rd the voter can choose between 16 political parties for the city council of Almere (188.335 inhabitants). Our city is one of the few cities in the Netherlands where the extreme right PVV party of Geert Wilders is participating for the first time. During the election campaign the 4th Balkenende government fell, when the PvdA ministers left the coalition. The results of these local elections are considered to be a strong indication for the nationwide election in June.

The colorful world of Amococo

This weekend the Amococo Luminarium of the Architects Of Air was visiting our town. The Amococo is an inflatable building inspired by Islamic architecture. It has 4 large colored domes, linked together by separate walk-through areas. We visited it three times to take pictures and shoot some videos. For my cameras the extreme intensity of the colors was a real challenge.
